Pier 17 Summer Pavilion

Located in lower Manhattan with stunning views of the New York City skyline and the Brooklyn Bridge, Pier 17 is the newest hot spot in New York City for concerts, fine dining and exciting nightlife. The award-winning architecture and design firm Rockwell Group was tasked  by the Howard Hughes Corporation with redeveloping the dated and Hurricane Sandy-damaged Pier 17 into a modern multi-purpose building with a rooftop venue that can host 4,000 concert goers.

Rockwell group collaborated with NUSSLI, a global leader in temporary structures for sporting, cultural and business events, to design the 3,900 square feet outdoor dining area also known as The Summer Pavilion. Their unique design required multiple retractable canopies to provide shade and rain protection with a fabric that doesn't look solid/closed off. Furthermore the entire shade system, including its support structure, had to be completely dismantled at the end of each season and reinstalled the following year, and the canopies could be updated, repaired and reconfigured if needed.

Ultimately, Infinity Canopy was selected to provide 16 systems of 6’-6” to 9’6” wide by 25’-30’ projection and 5-7 billows of varying lengths. When viewed from the side, the varying length panels create a unique look and feel that elevates the space into a modern, extraordinary space. Serge Ferrari W-96 fabric was selected to provide the look and feel of a mesh fabric while being waterproof. This achieves the “open” look while having shade and rain protection that the design team was aiming for. The canopies can be easily detached from the cables using gated clips fitted with wheels that glide effortlessly on the cables. Their modular design allows infinite flexibility, so the canopies can be altered or repaired as needed. Finally, pulley and rope system provides easy manual operation by the venue staff.

Within the last year, the new Pier 17 has quickly established itself as a dynamic, year-round destination for culinary and cultural entertainment, offering space for concerts, private events, product launches and more. With this year's introduction of the Seaport District's Winterland experience, featuring New York City's first open-air rooftop ice skating rink, Pier 17's popularity is only growing and Infinity Canopy is happy to shade the way.
